Turn 12, April 1916

Declarations:

Declarations:

Portugal declared war against Central Powers and officially joined Allied Powers.

Persia declared war against Central Powers and officially joined Allied Powers.

Japan and Germany signed peace agreement. Marshall islands and Kasier Wilhelm Land remain in Japanese possesion.

Italy bombed Wienna. Several thousands of casualties claimed. Austria-Hungary protested against such uncivilised and terroristic act.

Ottoman Empire captured Suez.

Russian marxist Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov Lenin gathers workers to stop the war.

Moderators note: Rebellions automatically incorporate all national territories they take, but in first 6 turns can claim only 50% of resources (rounded up per province). Damage done by rebellion is already too high, and in that way they are half way between reincorporation and incorporation.

And many other things. However, I found these excerpts from various newspapers published throughout the world:

Central Powers newspapers:

Germany:

Ruhr offensive crushed!
New offensive, started three days ago in Ruhr Valley, stopped when our reserve divisions filled the gap made after initial bombardment and assault of French 3rd army and parts of French 4th and 11th army. Situation is still unknown, but it is not to expect further advancement of French troops toward Rhine and river fortifications.
In this battle 164th infantry division is decimated because they were on the point of heaviest fightings but other divisions suffered moderate casualties, too. French 44th division is considered annihilated after succesfull counter-attack, and it is believed that 137th, 177th and 320th were lost in this attack…

Air battle over Trieste!
Air battle above Trieste gradually intensify. Our first ace, Oswald Boelcke, led our most succesfull fighter group, Jasta 6, against French and Italian aircrafts that desperately attempt to help ground troops in their effort to conquer Trieste. In last two months Oswald Boelcke remained as our best ace with 14th new victories but even that was not enough to lower intensity of Allied Forces attacks. It is expected that the situation will change when we deploy units from Eastern front to this area…
Great victories on the sea!
In last two weeks, our subs brought another two great victories to Kaiser Wilhelm. In English channel we sunk three British transport ships with 2 troop ships that tried to transfer troops to France and in Mediterranean we sunk 4 troop ships near Tobruk. These victories will significantly lower Anglo-French morale as both of these victories are considered as easy…
Battle at Alsace-Lorraine!
Although the focus of military operations is on the East, Western army group continuously keeps our ancient enemies at their feet. General opinion is that it is not yet the time for decisive battle here, but individual smaller offensives could sometimes give greater gains than expected.
However, this is not the case with current offensive which is cancelled after 2 days due to heavy French resistance. Minor casualties are reported, mostly of 33rd division that tried to break near Metz, but it is expected that French loses are high…
Operation Sledge-hammer started! Minsk conquered!
After almost a year of defensive in East Front, general Luddendorff asked that 4th, 5th and 11th joins in new army group and together advance through open fields from Grodno toward Minsk. At June 6th they started advance and operation Sledge-hammer commenced. But not all things started as we hoped for because Russians attacked advancing columns from Minsk and Brest-Litovsk direction. Small part (4 divisions) therefore answered on new threat and repulsed Russian divisions approaching from the south, while greater part deployed against eastern part of Russian armies.
In battle in which more then 4000 artillery pieces fought almost equivalent Russian formation, our artillery cleared the path for 1st tank division and for foot parts of 4th and 5th army which succesfully obliterated Russian defensive positions.
In this battle more then 1500 guns are captured and Russian casualties are greater then in any battle until today, while our losses were high, too.
Final victory is still too far, but we can see it from more brighter perspective, right now…
Transylvania taken back!
Our forces succeded to retake Transylvania from Russians in one swift and brillliant move. Unprepared for quick response, Russians left battlefield in great hurry when they faced our advancing columns…
Suez in Central Powers hands!
Our expeditionary force in Palestine, together with Ottoman army, compelled British and other Allied Powers units off Suez Canal. In this extraordinary enterprise a serious blow is given to Allied Powers plan to cut Central Powers from resources of other free nations in the world and trade with them.
In this attack only minor casualties are reported but French garrison there, together with British one, took heavy casualties and many thousands of prisoners of war ar taken…
Russian attacks on Lodz and Lemberg!
Russian offensives on Lodz and Lemberg that started this month, were crushed after their vanguards came in range of our well defended positions. Another hard lesson for Russians, proved to be more costly as Russian casualties are counted in tens of thousands. Our losses were negligible and our armies are still invincible…
Austria-Hungary:

Air battle over Trieste!
In last two months, Entante fighters renewed their air offensive against our units in Trieste. Our air army, still inferior in number but superior in ther bravery, fought against Entante fighters and bombers and we must honor them as our saviours as they made some of outstanding successes, as on June 7th and June 11th. However, as they fly on old Erste Monodeckers their power is limited, while Italians fly on more advanced aircrafts. But, on Monodeckers, Lieutenant Swartz achieved 7 air victories before he was shot down by French Morane aircraft…

Wienna in flame!
On June 14th, Italian bombers made one of the most barbaric attacks in history of the world, equal to fire in Alexandrian library and fire in Rome done by Vandals in 5th century. Our capital, Wienna, is attacked by heavy bombers and ruined. It is claimed that there are more then 15000 civilian casaulties. All residental parts of Wienna took at least one hit, but our factories remained intact, so this attack was intened only to bring destruction to civilians. Our government protested against this barbaric act and demanded that our army increase effort to kick Italy out of this war as soon as possible…
Lemberg offensive repulsed!
Last offensive of Russian scum is repulsed after counter-attack of our armies in the area. Offensive started with heavy bombardment but this revealed that large scale offencive is to be started so we prepared second line divisions that quickly sealed gap made after withdrawal of units that were under heaviest pressure.
Our losses were light, but Russian losses are estimated to be heavy…
Bulgaria:

Stavropol taken!
New conquest had the name of Stavropol. Our brilliant army took another victory against once invincible Russians and we force them for continuous retreat. Who knows, maybe in 2 or 4 months we enter Moscow…

Ottoman Empire:

Suez in our hands again!
In marvellous development of events, our glorious army retook Suez Canal from its former oppressors - so called British Empire. Here, we cannot neglect significant involvement of Germans and their brilliant strategists, but the backbone of this operation was Ottoman units.
Even entrance of Persia on Allied Powers side didn’t help them to sustain in front of our charging cavalry and victorious infantry. We took numerous prisoners of war and suffered only minor casualties…

Victories in Eastern Black Sea and Krasnodar!
Our glorious fleet achieved probably last victory against Russian fleet as with this victory last remnants of once one of 5 greatest fleet in the world no longer exist.
In the same time our Northern army commenced advancement from the south toward Krasnodar area and kicked Russians out of this strategically important point…
Spain:

Gibraltar still in British hands!
"Almost three months of heavy fighting, and we didn’t achieve significant advantage!", said general Hernandez after last unsuccesfull attack on British lines around Gibraltar. "Our navy was unable to stop both British and French army to reinforce Gibraltar garrison, and fresh troops are probably on their way there, again."
It is to expect that initial surprise that struck Allied Powers is now fading, and from this point there would be hard to keep our isolated position safe from intrusions that can come via Pyrenees or Gibraltar and to maintain, in the same time, strong force on the coasts.

Attack on Algeria failed!
After series of succesfull fightings against Frenches in Atlas mountains, South army suddenly withdrew about 200 kilometers to resupply. "Because of our surprising success and quick advancement, we were unable to deliver proper quantity of army supply to units on the front, thus our effort to reach Algeria failed when it shouldn’t", said general Delgado.
In fightings on Atlas, at least 42nd and 354th colonial divisions are destroyed, but it is to expect that some parts of elite 16th Marmont division are lost, too. That is serious problem for French colonial army and we expect…
Rio de Oro lost!
It was expected that after our approach to Central Powers camp France would attempt to take our overseas holdings. Thus, garrison of Rio de Oro prepared for forthcoming assault more then week before it started. Our navy, too, prepared to get there as soon as possible, but it was a hard task to avoid any conflict with both British and French navy and to come in time to reinforce garrison or to evacuate them.
However, Rio de Oro is lost, but good news come from our navy. It was noted that they intercepted lightly escorted British liner with more then 7 tons of gold in her hatches. After examining of ship books, it was found that the gold is sent to South African Union…
Allied Powers newspapers:

Great Britain

Gibraltar still holds!
After almost three months of heavy fighting, fortress of Gibraltar is still in our hands. Our navy did a remarkable effort, bringing almost 50000 fresh troops in Gibraltar, and French did their part supporting defense, too.
Righ now, the situation is stable, and Gibraltar is considered to be invincible again. General Murray ordered that all strategic points around Gibraltar should be reinforced, all communication lines between strong points should be renewed and maintained at all costs. "But, we must lean on the Navy because without them Gibraltar is doomed.", said Murray…

Subs sunk in English Channel!
5 subs sunk in last two days in English Channel and Middle Atlantic. It is believed that these subs are connected with recent sinking of troop ship Caledonia.
These sinkings occured after general order to intensify antisubmarine activities in our waters and such activities will carry on…
Suez Canal lost!
Bad news come, again, from Near East. Suez garrison, together with other troops surrendered to Ottoman Empire. This is serious blow for the Empire as both trade routes and reinforcements from India and Australia must travel significantly longer trip to transfer needed resources and troops to our fronts. New policy about Far East colonies and dominions is needed as we lose ground in North Africa…
France:

Spanish attack on Algeria repulsed!
It was unpleasant surprise to general Jules, when Spanish army attacked westernmost parts of our armies in Algeria. "It took more then a week until we were able to fight back", said Jules. "But, that gave time to our Western army to do their task in Rio de Oro. Important part is that we succeeded to keep Algeria, and we are, now, gathering units for final assault on Spanish main."
Although our losses are considered to be moderate, it is to expect that Spanish losses are many times as large…

Rio de Oro taken!
Almost in the same time as Spanish army advanced to Algeria, general Jules commenced attack on Spanish colony of Rio de Oro. Lightly undefended, this small province was very soon swarmed with our troops, and Spanish garrison was quickly forced to surrender…
Offensive on Ruhr abandoned!
Our new offensive on Ruhr had to be cancelled due to heavy resistance of German defenders. General Joffre considered that attack very risky, and he ordered that the offensive must be abandoned if enemy units react before we cross first and second line of trenches with our spearheads 44th and 137th divisions. We failed in this effort, but we suffered only minor casualties. On German side, it is believed that they suffered heavy losses, mostly due to our artillery bombardments…
Air battle over Trieste!
Our first air army fought heavy battle against German and Austro-Hungarian aircrafts during last few weeks. It was intended to keep Central Powers aircrafts busy while our land units approach Trieste and it partly succeeded in it. But heavy overcast during last two weeks forced our aircrafts most of time to remain on the ground.
Individual fightings occured, however. The most famous air battle was at 14th June when our aircrafts escorted Italian bombers on their raid on Wienna. At least 50 of Austrian and more then 40 of German aircrafts were shot down while we lost 14 Morane and 2 Nieuport aircrafts…
German attack at Metz (Alsace) repulsed!
Recent German offensive is repulsed after strong answer of our artillery on approaching German columns that tried to penetrate through our well defended first line of trenches. After two days of heavy fightings, Germans were forced to pull back on initial positions.
Our losses are considered to be light, but Germans elite formations took heavy casualties…
Suez Canal lost!
With heavy fightings for Gibraltar and loss of control over Suez Canal, it is clear that Central Powers intend to force us to spend more time to deliver troops on fronts. However, our advantage is still at sea and that should be exploited, even in new situation.
But, loss of Suez Canal brought serious problem to our colonial army as they fight, now, the battle on two fronts. Loss of valuable troops in battle for Suez Canal didn’t improve situation, dough…
Russia:

Minsk lost!
Bad, very bad news come from Minsk - general Rennenkampf and his staff were forced to withdraw the area after one of most furious attacks of best German armies. 1st and 2nd army seems to be lost, and there is need to quickly fill new gap in our defense. Also, this is the time when help or at least distraction of our western allies is desperately needed…

Transylvania lost!
Transylvania, recently recaptured by our army, is lost again! In heavy fightings, our infantry without proper support couldn’t match best prepared Gern armored columns. In this battle our losses, however, were minor, but the chance to keep Austro-Hungarians at check is lost, again…
Evenki and Kirgil lost to Japan!
We lost Evenki and Kirgil to Japanese warmongers after another two months of desperate figtings. Although the loss seems to be great, there are no immediate gains for Japan as these areas are desolate and poor, and casualties on Japan side seems to be great. Our casualties are moderate, however…
Battle of Grodno!
Attack on Grodno, started by Rennenkampf’s 1st and 2nd army had to be cancelled after German attack on Minsk. Even more, there were no signs of immediate effect of our attack as German columns were attacked from two directions and then deployed too soon to have advantage over uncovered troops.
Our losses were moderate but we inflicted high casualties to German army…
Battle for Lodz!
The garrison in Warsaw with defending armies are still almost encircled. There were needs to change things, and to help Minsk army group which is under heavy pressure.
Small offensive on Lodz area started to fullfill this task, and it is intended to be local offensive, not full scale. However, some gains are taken, and front line is pushed 1500 m on German side, with a cost of mere 2000 soldiers. German casualties were high, and they lost at least 100000 men…
Battle for Lemberg!
New offensive of southern army groups started against Central Powers units in Lemberg area. In one of the most brilliant operations, Russian armies annihilated German army group South as well as Austro-Hungarian 2nd army. Our losses were unexpectedly low, only 4600 men and 3 artillery pieces…
Italy:

Air battles above Trieste region!
In last five weeks, our great army fought several heavy battles against Austria-Hungary and her allies. The most remarkable fightings occured not in land but above where our great aces ward German and Austro-Hungarian fighters off our well known bomber units. In one of such fightings our air aces succeeded to shot more then 40 aircrafts in single day while we lost 11 fighters. Another great score is obtained on June 14th when we bombed Wienna - our aircrafts shot down more then 30 intercepting aircrafts and we didn’t lost a single bomber above Trieste…

Wienna bombed!
June 14th - the day which the Austrians will remember as the eve of their destruction, the day when Austria’s war industry is halved.
Destruction of factories in Wienna and Salzburg, and other leading factories in Lower Austria will significantly decrease will of Austro-Hungarians to fight against us and our allies. It is estimated that two or three such attacks could kick Austria off war, and then our rightfull claims for Trieste would be fulfilled…
Subs sunk near Cyprus!
3 subs sunk in last several days in Aegean Sea and Eastern Mediterranean sea. It is believed that these subs are German and that they sunk Auverne and Gulf of Biscay last month. Although this is considered as great successes of our navy, it didn’t help, at the moment, to our troops in north Africa…
Persia:

War declared against evil Central Powers!
Our beloved Sovereign, Shakhs Aziz, declared that from this moment on, we are in war against evil Central Powers. The nation should know that it was not easy to stay neutral when German and Austro-Hungarian submarines sink our ships that are trading goods with European neutral such as Denmark, Norway and Sweden as well as with some other coutries, and such activities greatly damage our small economy. Demand that our shipping should be spared of war rage, met no understanding in Central Powers ranks and there were more understanding in Great Britain and France for our cause…

Japan:

Kirgil and Evenki taken!
In last victories of our superb army, territories of Kirgil and Evenki are conquered, thus puttin front line more westward than even the most optimistic average Japanese predicted. However, the battle for Evenki were considered very fierce, and many of our soldiers lost their live there, but Russian force took heavy casualties and their morale and integritiy here is severaly broken,…

United States of America

Speach of president Lee before Senate!
Our president had a speach before Senate yesterday. Here are some excerpts of his speach that were intended to be published:
"The Government of the United States of America will find the rogue nation that stole our military secrets about mobile armament."
"And we will not have this European war pour over into the Western Hemisphere. We will fight if we have to, in order to keep the European Affairs in Europe. The Department of War has notified me that there are hostile and dangerous troops near the U.S. sponsored islands of the Philippines. We will not sit by if actions are taking against the countries under the protection of the America flag."
Does it mean that we are preparing for war? High representatives of Department of War denied that USA is preparing for mobilization, and higher activities in movements of our Navy is explained as there is need to protect our overseas holdings against European influence…
