There is peace throughout most of the Alpha Quadrant in the 29th century. Smaller conflicts still break out occasionally between the smaller races, but between the main races - Humans, Romulans, Cardassians, Klingons, etc - there is peace. Indeed, it's now fairly common to see a Romulan or Cardassian serving onboard a Federation ship.

There is even peace with the Dominion, although it is even now a little uneasy at times. While the Vorta will sometimes serve onboard a Federation ship, the Jem'Hadar are still banned from serving with Starfleet.

The Borg are still a threat, with mostly skirmishes and sometimes outright battles taking place on a semi-regular basis throughout the last 500 years.

But it is Species 8472 that has become the new threat to civilisation. 8472 seemed content with making occasional attacks in the Delta, Gamma and Beta Quadrants for many years. But since 2748, they have made regular forays into the Alpha Quadrant to lauch attacks, thankfully mostly on a fairly small scale. But the two times they did lauch larger attacks - 2795 and 2828 - the entire Quadrant only just beat them back both times. It is feared that they may one day gather an invasion force and launch an attack on the Alpha Quadrant before the Allied Races can discover a decisive weakness that will destroy them.
