guidelines

  requirements

Allrighty, this is really simple. As an active member of this sim, you are required to:
  • Write at least one post a week (you can write as many as you want to...)

  • Write a biography for your character and email it to the captain for approval so it can be posted on the website. Click here for an example bio form. Study this FSG Email Academy lesson for tips on writing your biography. Also, please study this lesson for character's we DON'T want to see on the Helios. This is important, so please do so before you submit your bio.

  • Subscribe to the listserve:
    Subscribe to usshelios
    Powered by groups.yahoo.com
You can join the listserve but only lurk, if you wish. But lurkers may NOT send messages to the listserve without prior permission from the Captain.

  • Inform the captain (via the listserve or in a personal email) if you can't post at least once a week for personal reasons (eg. vacation)

  • If you are inexperienced with email simming and want to join then there is a website that you need to read which teaches you the tricks and tips of email simming. Click here for the website. Please do NOT join up with the email academy, because the U.S.S. Helios is NOT a member of the sim group FSG - the academy was created by a good friend; just read over all the lessons thoroughly. You can also read over our previous posts to see how we do it. If after that you feel you could do it then please email the Captain a sample of your work and he will decide whether you may or may not join.

  • And most importantly... HAVE FUN and enjoy the sim!

  •
      promotions
  • On the Helios, crewmembers are promoted according to a points system. Crewmembers obtain 2 points for each post written, and once their total reaches a certain level, they become eligible for promotion. You can also gain points for each person you recruit to the Helios!

  • Promotion is not automatic, though, and you will only get promoted if and when the Captain feels you are ready.

  • For further information on the points system, click here.

  •
      rules for posting

Please try to follow these rules when posting to the listserve. It'll make life much easier for you and your fellow crew mates.

  • Please include your character's name in the subject line followed by a title for your post.

example: Subject: Captain Malcolm Wyler, "Survival of the Fittest"

You can even put your character's name in the from line.

example: From: Captain Malcolm Wyler <melrick@dingoblue.net.au>

This will make it much easier to organize your mail, trust me :-)

  • Please include your character's rank, name, position, title of the post and stardate within the first few lines of your post.

    example:

    __________________________
    Captain Malcolm Wyler
    Commanding Officer
    Stardate: 50101.12
    "Survival of the Fittest"
    __________________________

If you don't know how to calculate the stardate from the real date, please check here. It's easier than you think...

  • Please, don't use HTML or styles in your post. A lot of email clients can't read that and it turns your post into gibberish. Plain text is good enough.

  • When making Out Of Character posts, please include 'OOC:' in your subject line.

example: Subject: OOC: I'm going on holidays!

Similarly, when including OOC additions to your normal post, please enclose it within <<OOC: >>.

example: <<OOC: Okay, Ayleece, I've set it now it's your turn! :-)>>

  • Please try to break up your posts into several paragraphs. It makes it much easier to read them that way... nobody enjoys reading through a huge chunk of text. And please check grammar and spelling before you send your post. Run it through a spell checker if you're not good with spelling.
  • Again, I'm not trying to annoy you with these rules for posting, they are more suggestions than orders. Nothing will happen to you if you forget them once in a while... It's just a nice gesture to keep your posts in the same format.

Hint: If you can, create a folder or additional mailbox for your U.S.S. Helios mail and filter your mail against the word "HELIOS" in the subject line.

      stardate

When using a stardate in this sim, we are not using the 'real' Star Trek format... which is waaaay too confusing to understand anyway. Instead, we take the real date and just put it into a 'stardate like' format. That way we're actually able to read those dates.

Please follow these simple rules when converting the real date into a stardate:

  • For example, January 12, 2001 would be stardate 50101.12

  • Use a '5' as the first number

  • Take the last two digits of the year (eg. '01' in the year 2001)

  • Then add the two-digit number for the month (eg. 01 for January, 11 for November)

  • Add a point '.'

  • Add the current day and your stardate is complete!
