Bolt FAQ by Reebok Matthew Bolt is an only child. His parents live in Phoenix, AR and are looking forward to their son being the first in the family to graduate from college.
Working on his Ph.D. at the University of Arizona, struggling grad student Matthew Bolt was part of a team that was designing a new, more efficient power generator. Despite safety precautions, someone managed to leave a set of tools on top of the new transformer design. Bolt noticed this just as the power up sequence was initiating and, rather than abort the start-up, he double checked the timer and decided he had enough time to make a quick dash in and grab the tools.

Unfortunately, the timer itself was faulty and the sequence completed
much sooner than expected. Bolt was caught in between two massive coils
and an obscene amount of electricity was sent through his body. By some
miracle, he survived, though it was several days before he regained
consciousness in the hospital.
He was surprised that he didn't have so much as a burn mark on him.
He was dismayed, though, to discover that he had not a single hair on
his body. It was as if the accident had also acted as a massive
electrolysis treatment. Noting that he was currently alone, he reached
for the call button to summon a nurse and a spark jumped from his
fingers. He gingerly reached for the button again and moments later, a
nurse and several doctors rushed into the room. It was soon discovered
that his body had undergone some severe changes. He seemed to have
stored up an enormous amount of electricity and, after a few false
starts (in which he spent several hours stuck to the ceiling before he
figured out how to turn off the static field), he managed to get a basic
handle on what he could do.
Not long after he gained his powers (and control over them), he found himself in the midst of an armed bank-robbery. A low powered metahuman, calling himself "Charger," along with a few henchmen tried robbing the bank -- unsuccessfully. Bolt made quick use of his speed and electrical abilities to quickly put down the would-be robbers.
Between the news coverage and word of mouth, he came to the attention of some ad execs at Reebok. Bolt was soon contacted and offered a lucrative contract to represent the athletic shoe manufacturers. Since a college education rarely comes cheap, he accepted, although now, a year later, he often regrets that decision. Owing to the clauses in his contract, Bolt is obliged to occasionally wear a small, specially designed video camera to tape segments for a show, "Justice Like Lightning..." in which he appears as a regular.
